Overview of China Six LLC

China Six

China Six LLC conducts due-diligence investigations of Chinese companies and executives. The firm's CEO and President and their researchers each have a decade or more of experience in investigative reporting or due diligence work in China. They specialize in uncovering information that confirms or denies what Chinese companies represent to investors, arming their clients with facts they must have to invest successfully and avoid the financial debacles that have become commonplace in this burgeoning but unforgiving market. China Six works on a project basis; they present a full project plan, including expected deliverables, timing and cost. They serve hedge fund, private equity firms, and corporate clients.

Matt Pottinger
China Six LLC, Founder and CEO

Mr. Pottinger's career as a U.S. Marine Corps intelligence officer and investigative journalist were the ideal foundation for China Six. He covered China for the Wall Street Journal from 2001 to 2005 and for Reuters from 1998 to 2001. His stories, including investigations into Chinese industry, politics, the energy sector and the 2003 SARS epidemic, won awards from the Society of Publishers in Asia and nominations for Pulitzer Prizes. He is fluent in spoken and written Chinese.

In September 2005, Matt put aside his writing career to serve as a U.S. Marine. He completed three combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, receiving the Bronze Star medal and the Michael Kuszewski Award for Marine Corps Intelligence Officer of the Year. In mid-2009, Matt was requested by name by General Stanley McChrystal to return to Afghanistan to work for the war's director of intelligence. Matt spearheaded an investigation into problems with the U.S. intelligence effort, co-authoring with General Michael Flynn the critical 2010 report, "Fixing Intel: A Blueprint for Making Intelligence Relevant in Afghanistan," which was praised by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates as "spot on" and has become required reading at military training schools across the United States. While in Afghanistan, Matt also co-founded and trained the first Female Engagement Teams, which have since been adopted by the Marines and U.S. Army Special Forces. Matt was the 2010-11 Edward R. Murrow Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York before founding China Six in July 2011.

While 2009 saw hedge funds experience their best performance since 1999, assets are still nearly 25% off from their peaks and the number of hedge fund closures was the second highest on record after 2008. Recent surveys show that hedge fund managers are poised take in strong inflows this year, but many investors are demanding more transparency, better liquidity and lower fees. Institutions are rethinking their investment strategies and many are eschewing complex strategies in favor of simpler ones. And many expect that 2010 will be a year in which lawmakers and regulators tighten their scrutiny over hedge funds.

How are hedge fund managers responding to these trends? What will the industry look like as a result of these changes? What role will hedge funds play in institutional investors’ portfolios in the future? Our panelists will share their perspectives on these issues and others, and invite the audience to discuss and share their views. The panel discussion will be followed by a cocktail reception.
